Iona Nightlife
A prominent British newspaper listed the Iona Village Hall disco as one of the 'top ten nights out in Scotland'. This is perhaps half-jest, half-truth. Whether you're interested in the music of Tibetan Buddhist monks, North American gospel hymns, Scottish folk, or Hip Hop, the island certainly has plenty to offer.
Obviously the safety and quietness of the island is also a prime allure for evening walks across the Machair or up to the North End. Remember that during high summer it is does not get completely dark until after 11pm, and if there's a full moon as well, you can take many a magical stroll after dinner or a leisurely pint at the pub. Conversely you'll need a flashlight for the autumn evenings when the lack of streetlights and the swift fall of night will make an evening trip to the Abbey an entertaining affair.
St Columba Hotel
The St. Columba Hotel was taken over by a group of island residents in 2004 and over the past 5 years has enjoyed a considerable amount of investment in its facilities and service. It is twice the size of the Argyll and has a busy restaurant that caters for guests and non-residents. It has great sea food fresh from island boats, lots of home grown salads and vegetables, as well as dramatic views from its Dinning Room and sun lounge.
Iona Community Ceilidh
Monday Night Iona Community Ceilidh. Not to be missed if you have never had a turn at telling a good story or enjoying a traditional Scottish dance. This is the perfect place to learn the steps, as most people who attend are new to such merriment. There will be many minor collisions, but this is all part of the fun. Turn up at 10pm.
Friday / Saturday Night Disco
Friday / Saturday Night Discos. If you want to have a more up-to-date 'clubbing' experience, this is your only island choice, and it is often a surprise how much fun you can have. The village hall is replete with bottle openers screwed to the walls, for your convenience. Check the village notice board for dates and times.
Community Arts Council
Community Arts Council - Check the village street notice board for different events occurring across the island. Concerts are often held in the village library. The variety is impressive and most of the dates occur in the summer. One of the best ways to meet locals is to attend such events.
Evening Trips To Mull
You are not restricted to simply Iona for your evening's entertainment, a water taxi over to Fionnphort and back can allow you sample a life on the "other island". Take either a scheduled ride on the Volante or book Mark Jardine for an evening's return after either:
The Keel Row
This is a small but atmospheric pub to be found in Fionnphort with worn wooden floors, coal fire, granite walls and plenty of banter. There's food to be had, draft beers to be sampled and a pool table laying in wait for a challenge.
Ninth Wave
Just opened in 2009, this restaurant is run by husband and wife team John & Carla. John is a local fisherman and Carla a fantastic chef who uses
the best of local to produce amazing tasting menus. Lots of fresh shellfish and "crofters bounty" are carefully crafted into an intimate fine
dining experience. Reservations are essential.
